Partner

Joseph Kosky is a partner in the Disputes team at Greenwoods GRM, having previously practised for 8 years at Locke Lord LLP, a top 50 US firm, where he was one of the founding partners of their London office.

Joseph has a broad range of experience in civil and commercial litigation and arbitration. He handles international disputes, arbitrations, professional negligence claims, civil fraud, emergency remedies and more.

Joseph has an outstanding reputation for his work involving businesses and private individuals in the Middle East.  He has represented the Iraqi government and several state-owned entities in their international litigation for many years.  This has included advising the Iraqi Government on the settlement of a dispute involving claims well in excess of $1billion, which was at the heart of one of the longest-running actions in the history of the English commercial courts.  He is also highly experienced in dealing with the complexities of commercial disputes involving claims by and against States and issues of sovereign/state immunity.

Amongst handling over 20 reported decisions including several cases in the Supreme Court and Court of Appeal, Joseph also acted for the claimant in a complex shareholder dispute in the oil & gas sector: Glengary Overseas Ltd v JKX Oil & Gas plc (2015) UKSC 71 resulting in an important Supreme Court decision about the continuing importance of the ‘proper purpose rule’ in English company law.

He was a key speaker at the Young Arbitration Review Conference in Lisbon discussing the effects of Brexit on international arbitration.

In his spare time, Joseph enjoys spending time with his family, fly-fishing, watching Chelsea FC and singing.
