3 things to consider when choosing your training contract

Choosing where to apply for your training contract can be a daunting task. So, to help you through the process, Stephanie Wilcox (Senior Solicitor) shares her thoughts on what makes Greenwoods GRM an excellent place to be a trainee. Having secured her training contract, Stephanie started as a Paralegal in 2012 and has recently been promoted to Senior Solicitor so she has an insight into the great experiences you can expect during the start of your career at Greenwoods GRM.

Here are Steph’s ‘top three’ things to consider before going full ‘Google deep dive’ on your training contract:

  1. Will you enjoy where you work?

Although it’s crucial to work in a firm that has a great work ethic, it’s important you also enjoy going to work.  At Greenwoods GRM, we believe that it is important to work hard but we also want to have ‘fun’ too – and we thrive off the sense of community that it generates. We have active social and charity committees which are responsible for organising events throughout the year and they never fail to disappoint – giving a great opportunity to build great relationships with colleagues.

  1. Will you have the freedom to manage your own caseload?

Without freedom in your role to be trusted to ‘get on with it’, your professional development can be hindered. Greenwoods GRM puts you in the driving seat from the start. We encourage our trainees to be independent and proactive thinkers although we do provide all the support needed along the way.


  1. Will there be opportunities for career progression and development?

Landing a training contract can be tough given the competitive legal climate; however it is important to look beyond your training contract. You will be eager to develop your career after your training contract finishes, and we nurture that enthusiasm. Greenwoods GRM is very focussed on identifying your development needs. As a result, you can be safe in the knowledge that your career won’t hit a wall. We also fund and encourage our young lawyers to join professional networks to further enhance their professional development, expand their networking skills, and build new contacts.
